An archway off the croquet lawn leads to the historic Victorian walled garden, which supplies the hotel with flowers and the kitchen with home-grown produce, including fruit and herbs. TV garden presenter and lecturer, Mary Payne, is currently implementing a replanting of our gardens and grounds in order to keep them eye-catching and fresh, at the same time maintaining the romantic style for which Hunstrete is known.
The present day 71 acres were once part of a much larger historic estate dating back to the 10th century. Today the acreage is home to our own herd of fallow deer and the remainder of the land includes pastureland and natural unspoiled woodland. The tranquillity of the area encourages an abundance of wildlife.
The gardens, accommodation and cuisine alike have been highly acclaimed in recent Press Articles.
To the north of the grounds is the historic ice house which, although rebuilt at some stage following a storm, was used originally for the storage of ice to preserve game and produce for the main house.
The gardens at Hunstrete contain some fine specimens. In the orchard is a magnificent Malus hupehensis from China. This is a glorious sight when in flower. Next to it is an equally spectacular cherry (Prunus 'Shirotae'). This forms a flat topped tree with slightly pendulous branches laden with double white blossoms.
